Bruce Mortimer Photograph and Document Collection

Bruce Mortimer

Bruce Mortimer was born in Castine in 1950 and has summered there since his birth while “wintering’” in Winthrop. He attended the Auburn schools and earned graduate and undergraduate degrees in the University of Maine system. He has been a middle school science teacher in Monmouth, Maine throughout his career.

In the early 1970s, Bruce built a metal detector from scratch, which provided him with the means to unearth artifacts from Castine’s early history.

The father of three children and grandfather of eight, he spends much of his time with his family following their athletic adventures. But, his passion for Castine history continues, and he actively adds to his collection, acquiring books by local authors, town and family documents, photographs, postcards and antiques from Maine and around the world. His goal is to return these well-travelled historical treasures “back home.”
