What We Offer
Witherle Memorial Library maintains a comprehensive collection of 13,000 volumes including current bestsellers and award-winners, titles across many genres, CD books, DVDs, and music CDs. In addition, we have magazines, daily newspapers, and information from local service groups available. The library subscribes to several digital services as well.
Library Card
Anyone may use the resources of the Library, but only registered patrons may borrow materials. A librarian can assist you with registering for a card.
If you are a year-round resident, property owner, or long-term summer renter from Castine, Penobscot, Brooksville, Sedgwick, Blue Hill, Brooklin, Orland, or Bucksport, you can get a free library card. Also, we provide cards to MMA students and faculty. Proof of residency and ID are required.
Visitors to the Castine area may register for a card by completing an application, providing ID, and making a $25 refundable cash deposit.

MaineCat contains 100 library collections from 7 large online library systems allowing for a broader search. If what you’re looking for isn’t on MaineCat please contact the library to initiate a special request from Bangor or to search WorldCat.
Maine State Library’s Reciprocal Borrowing Program allows patrons from participating libraries to borrow materials from other participating libraries in person. Witherle Library is a participating library. Visiting patrons must 1) present a library card from a participating library and 2) have an account in good standing with that library. Patrons may borrow up to 15 items from this library at any one time.
Homebound Delivery Service
The library will fulfill and/or select, package, and deliver materials to patrons who are not able to make regular visits due to health, mobility or disability. For more information, to enroll or volunteer please contact the library.
Hearing Loop Available at Library Presentations
The library’s Reading Room sound system features a hearing loop which is compatible with many hearing aids. It’s simple to connect to the system – just ask library staff for assistance. If your hearing aid does not loop then we have headphones which pick up feed from the presenter’s bluetooth mic.
Literacy Volunteers of Bangor
Do you or someone you know want to read, write, spell or speak English better? Literacy Volunteers of Bangor is dedicated to serving any Bangor area adult who wants either to work on basic English skills or to learn English as another language. Tutors follow the model that there is no such thing as an average learner, and there is no such thing as the best way to learn. Volunteers seek to change the direction of clients’ lives without judgment. Their services are free and confidential. Audio applications are available.
