Witherle Memorial Library will sponsor a six-week discussion group on “The American Family and the Law,’’ beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at the library’s Reading Room. Each session will last for about one hour and will run on Wednesdays with breaks on Nov. 6 and Nov. 27.

Castine resident Lawrence Rosen will lead the discussions which will survey, through actual cases and brief readings, a wide range of issues, including marriage regulations, child custody, abortion, parental and grandparental rights and adoption. The sessions also will consider current Supreme Court cases and popular commentaries, and each session will include a series of illustrative slides. No background in law is necessary to participate.

Rosen is the Cromwell Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at Princeton University and Adjunct Professor of Law Emeritus at Columbia University. A member of the bar of the U.S. Supreme Court and named to the first group of MacArthur Award recipients he has taught family law at various universities and is the author most recently of Legitimacy in Crisis and The Rights of Groups. Last year he offered this discussion topic through the Acadia Senior College at Mount Desert. He is now a full-time resident of Castine.
