Juneteenth: Ashley Bryan’s Beautiful Blackbird

Juneteenth: Ashley Bryan's Beautiful Blackbird
Date: June 19, 2025
Time: 10:00 am - 11:30 am
Join the Wilson Museum & Witherle Memorial Library for a Juneteenth Celebration featuring Beautiful Blackbird by Ashley Bryan!
“We’ll see the difference a touch of black can make. Just remember, whatever I do, I’ll be me and you’ll be you.”
“Beautiful Blackbird” explores the appreciation of one’s own heritage and beauty. In this story, the colorful birds of Africa ask Blackbird, who they think is the most beautiful of birds, to color them black so they can be beautiful too, though Blackbird reminds them that true beauty comes from the inside. (Simon and Schuster).
Youth from Kindergarten to Grade 4 and their grown-ups are invited to a theatrical read-aloud of Beautiful Blackbird, followed by a guided craft inspired by the book! Led by Georgia Zildjian (Manager of Museum Learning, Wilson Museum) and Debra Orado (Children’s Librarian, Witherle Memorial Library), attendees will create their own beautiful birds and a communal art piece as they explore the beauty and strength of our differences.  Attendees must be accompanied by a grown-up.
The Wilson Museum’s Hutchins Education Center.
This is a free program! Registration is encouraged but not required to attend.
Please register with the name and age of your youth participant(s) by emailing education@wilsonmuseum.org
