Tom Lamontanaro and Jennifer Misek on
Identifying Scams and Digital Imposters

Hang up. Verify. Block. Report.

Over the landline, on your mobile, in email, through the mail…, bad actors try to reach you.

Security breaches have increased at an alarming rate. Advances in artificial intelligence and translation tools are making scams harder to detect, too. And, yet, we’re encouraged to conduct our banking, check our medical records, and purchase things using technology. How to use digital services and at the same time protect our information and identity? How to tell the good from the bad?

Tom, a security analyst at Colby College and moderator of the library’s Digital Security Discussion Group, and Jennifer, a special agent assigned to the FBI Boston office and working in Bangor, will discuss current trends in scams and fraud, recommend how to identify bad actors, and, if your information is taken, explain what you can do about it.

Their clear, simple advice will give you an upper hand when dealing with scammers and fraudsters.
