Sarah Stammen
Chair

Sarah spent her childhood summers on the icy waters of Wadsworth Cove, reluctantly leaving each August to go back home to school. She earned a BFA from RISD, and has spent the majority of her career focused on color design, which is like subjective logic (ask her about it). She has color-number/letter synesthesia, which is why she might say ‘blue’ when she’s thinking ‘3’ (ask her about it). She likes most art, some culture, and all dry humor – and also puzzles, utility, and simple things. She listens to audio books more than she reads pages, riffs in the kitchen more than she follows recipes, aspires to grow flowers but also grows weeds, and is delighted to be the first to do the crossword in whatever periodical arrives next. She loves her family the most.

Lawrence Rosen
Vice-Chair

Larry Rosen is the Cromwell Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at Princeton University and Adjunct Professor of Law Emeritus at Columbia University. He was named to the first group of MacArthur Award recipients and is a member of the bar of the US Supreme Court. After many summers in Castine he is now a full-time resident, adjunct faculty member at the Maine Maritime Academy, and a recent addition to several town committees.

Marc Scoppettone
Treasurer

Marc originally hails from the San Francisco Bay Area. He has lived in Castine since 2021 with his partner Grant and ill-behaved pup Alistair. When not reading books procured by the good people of Witherle Library, Marc enjoys obsessing over his garden and fledgling apple orchard. He spends much time wondering why he spends much time trying to create his own compost when it can be procured from a third-party at a more reasonable price. In his professional work, he consults with attorneys on financial matters related to commercial litigation.

Karen Lyons
Secretary

I’m a Connecticut native who fell in love with Maine on a family camping trip in Baxter State Park, despite the fact that I immediately fell into a rather chilly Maine brook on the first night. I attended Colby College, where I met my husband, Bill, and we’re still married 56 years later. We have two children, our daughter who was born in Boston while Bill was in law school, and our son who is a Maine native, as he arrived while we lived in Bangor. After 8 years there, we moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, where Bill taught in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Law school and I pursued a PhD in English while we raised our young children. Despite my level of education, I maintain that the most important book in my life is Make Way for Ducklings, which is the first book I read without help. I ultimately became the Assistant then the Associate Director of the University Honors Program and taught in the English department and the Women’s and Gender Studies program for 30 years. My pursuits currently involve reading, traveling, often to visit family who live in the Midwest, trying to sound as if I know what I’m saying in French Press, and knitting compulsively. I also edit the Castine Historical Society newsletter. I am honored to serve the library and its patrons.

Angela Fisher
Community Relations

Angela grew up in Timonium, Maryland, where she spent much of her childhood at her local library. After living in Washington, DC for five years, she moved to New York City for 13 years, followed by three years in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. In 2020, she relocated to Castine with her husband, Andrew, and their two children.

Angela is a practicing architect who enjoys traveling with her family and spending time outdoors, especially hiking and going on long walks. A lifelong dog lover, she has recently developed an appreciation for cats—particularly Maine Coons.

Nick Berry
Library Director

Nick Berry grew up in Livermore, Maine, most of the time with his head in a book or in the library finding the next book to stick his head into (or grabbing the animated Hobbit movie for the 1,000th time). Nick volunteered at Treat Memorial Library and worked as a library aide in the school library throughout high school.  He earned a BFA in Creative Writing from the University of Maine at Farmington in 2011 and a MS in Library & Information Science from Syracuse University in 2013. He served as the Library Director for the Hartland Public Library in Hartland, Maine for six years before becoming Director of Witherle Memorial Library in 2021. If you don’t see him at the library you may find him walking around town with his standard poodle, Gus Gus, on the weekends.
