“Miss Orado, Why is there always a different summer reading theme?,” one of my students queried when I introduced our summer reading program to her class this spring. Simply put we choose a theme for summer reading to focus our summer programming and encourage an interest in reading that expands our choice of reading genres. It is important for the library to advocate for reading over the summer as it takes intention with all of the other forms of fun that vie for children’s attention. Summer reading helps make sure that books find their way into the hands of our children and teens.
We encourage everyone to READ books that inspire, to think about new ideas and encourage questions, and to participate in hands-on activities to help experience the world that is around us. This year’s theme, Reading Colors Your World, can stimulate imagination and creativity, encouraging readers to think outside the box and explore new ideas. It emphasizes the diverse ways that reading can enrich life, from discovering new cultures and perspectives to enhancing creativity and finding beauty in the differences around us.
The broad motif of “colors” provides a context for exploring our summer programs. Library patrons, of all ages, will be encouraged to develop creativity, try new things, and explore art. Register for Botanical Eco Printing or try your hand at Sea Bag Weaving, create a puppet and tell a story, attend our Juneteenth Celebration with a tribute to Ashley Bryant’s artwork via a theatrical read-aloud of Beautiful Blackbird, followed by a guided craft, just take a look at our website to see all the events we have planned this summer.. You can pick up a Take & Make bag on Fridays to continue creating and exploring at home or find your way to the library for Crafty Wednesday, and participate in a stand alone do-it-yourself craft.
Expand your musical horizons at our Music Under the Tent event on July 26 just across the street from Art Under the Elms. Traditional brass, steel drums, folk guitar and violin and jazz, all on the same day!
We encourage you to “Read a book and color your world” with us at the library this summer!
