Snow is Falling and Books are Calling!

By Debra Orado, Children’s Librarian

What comes to mind when you think of Winter?  Some of us delight in the coming of crisp air, snowflakes, hot chocolate, and winter sports. For others, winter thoughts are not as cheerful. Most of all, the colder days provide a great time for delving into a good book.

No matter your thoughts on winter, we have the activity for you. The Witherle Children’s Room is holding our 2nd Annual Winter Reading Challenge in the Witherle Children’s Room, which runs through February 28.

All ages can participate. The annual program challenges students to track their progress by completing five activities on a bingo game board. Examples of game board activities include “Read a book about science,” “Read a book in a series,” “Read a book about a holiday” and many more. Complete a bingo game vertically, horizontally, or diagonally to get entered into our raffle to win a winter snow tube from LL Bean. Each completed bingo card will earn you one entry into the drawing.

To get started you can either download the bingo card from our website (witherlelibrary.net) or come into the library to pick up a paper copy. Winter Reading Bingo gives you yet another reason to curl up with a good book and stay warm this season.

While you’re at it, why not check out some books with a winter theme at the Witherle Memorial Library? Our website has several recommendation galleries to pursue: “WML’s Best Children’s Books of 2022”, “New Book Selections”, and a new gallery “Winter Reads”. And adults, be sure to check out our “New to the Collection” gallery. Each slider allows you to order online simply by clicking on the book cover.  You’ll need your library card number. I’m also happy to make book suggestions.

Grab a book, grab a blanket, and grab a couch while you daydream about sledding down the hills of Castine in your new snow tube.
