SUMMARY:Trends Series: The Future of Money
DESCRIPTION:Moderated by Howell Jackson\n\n"For many years\, most of us hav
e been paying for things with cash\, checks and credit or debit cards. But
the future of money could look very different. Cash is becoming less popu
lar and some experts are recommending that paper money be phased out compl
etely (or at least mostly). In many parts of the world from China to East
Africa\, mobile phones are increasingly popular ways of making payments. S
ome technologists see Bitcoin and other brands of cryptocurrencies as the
money of the future. In response\, central bankers are starting to talk ab
out entering the world of digital currencies with 21st Century updates of
the greenback and pound sterling. In ten years’ time\, what (if anything
) will be in your wallet?\n\nTo tee up our discussion on June 26th\, I’v
e pulled together a package of optional readings. First are a handful of r
ecent press stories (plus one speech) offering various perspectives on the
future of money. Second are several somewhat longer background pieces exp
loring in greater detail a few of the issues. I’ve also included several
books for possible future reading for anyone who wants to explore further
. Don’t worry about reading any more than you want. There is absolutely
no need to read everything. Also\, no payments required. I look forward to
seeing you on the 26th!" Howell Jackson\n\nTo register please contact the
library.  Information packets are available at the front desk.

SUMMARY:Maine Writers Series: Hall Crowther
DESCRIPTION:"I don't have any children\, so I've decided to claim all the f

om-fighting to go around. Crowther is a writer whose own career is marked
by sharp political and social commentary in the pages of national and regi

 n. In Freedom Fighters and Hell Raisers\, he turns his attention to the be
st and the brightest of the recently departed generation in the South.\n\n
Hal Crowther is a journalist and essayist whose work has appeared in Time\
, Newsweek\, the Atlanta Journal Constitution\, The Oxford American\, Gran
ta\, the Independent\, the Progressive Populist\, and other independent we
eklies around the country. He is the author of four books of essays: An In

on All Things Phony\, Foolish\, and Fundamentally Wrong with America Today
. Crowther is the recipient of a Pushcart Prize\, the Lillian Smith Book A
