SUMMARY:The American Family and the Law
DESCRIPTION:Witherle Memorial Library will sponsor a six-week discussion gr
 oup on ``The American Family and the Law\,’’ beginning at 6:30 p.m. on
  Wednesday\, Oct. 30 at the library’s Reading Room. Each session will la
 st for about one hour and will run on Wednesdays with breaks on Nov. 6 and
  Nov. 27.\nCastine resident Lawrence Rosen will lead the discussions which
  will survey\, through actual cases and brief readings\, a wide range of i
 ssues\, including marriage regulations\, child custody\, abortion\, parent
 al and grandparental rights and adoption. The sessions also will consider 
 current Supreme Court cases and popular commentaries\, and each session wi
 ll include a series of illustrative slides. No background in law is necess
 ary to participate.\nRosen is the Cromwell Professor Emeritus of Anthropol
 ogy at Princeton University and Adjunct Professor of Law Emeritus at Colum
 bia University. A member of the bar of the U.S. Supreme Court and named to
  the first group of MacArthur Award recipients he has taught family law at
  various universities and is the author most recently of Legitimacy in Cr
 isis and The Rights of Groups. Last year he offered this discussion topi
 c through the Acadia Senior College at Mount Desert. He is now a full-time
