DESCRIPTION:A Lecture by Jill Schoof\n\nKnitting and Math: A Closer Look wi
 ll discuss the many ways that knitting and other fiber arts assist mathema
 ticians\, while the mathematics also inspires art.\n\nPreregistration is r
 equired and a ZOOM link will be sent to participants.  A list of selected
  books can be found below.\n\n***\n\n Many areas of math which may be ver
 y abstract in textbooks can be understood intuitively using knitting and c
 rocheting and other fiber arts.  The books of Sarah Marie Belcastro and D
 ebbie New have led a generation of mathematicians to utilize fiber arts in
  modeling\, and have led fiber artists to explore mathematics-based design
 s.\n\nUse of knitting and other fiber arts is a very exciting tool for tea
 ching abstract math. Unlike computer graphics\, a knitted object is flexib
 le and can be physically manipulated and offers insights into the mathemat
 ics.  Mathematical objects that can be made using knitting and crochet in
 clude topological surfaces\, polygons\, Mobius strips\, Sierpinski triangl
 es\, and hyperbolic surfaces.\n\nThese surfaces are interesting artistical
 ly as well as mathematically\, and we will look at many beautiful and inte
 resting examples of work in which Mathematics serves Art\, and vice versa.
