As a philosopher\, he is Professor (Emeritus) of Philosophy at Long Island University and Past President of the International Associa tion of Aesthetics. He is the author of books and articles in philosophy\, particularly in aesthetics\, environmental aesthetics\, and ethics. In mu sic he has been active as a pianist and composer.\n\nAlicia Anstead is a writer\, editor\, producer and educator. She teaches narrative journalism at Harvard University Extension School and is producer of the annual ARTS FIRST Festival at Harvard. She has written for many national publications including the New York Times\, Scientific American\, NPR's Morning Ed ition and The Writer Magazine\, for which was also the Editor-in-Chief.  She has been a fellow at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard \, the National Arts Journalism Program at Columbia and the NEA Arts Edito rs Program at Duke.  \n\nThe Social Aesthetics of Human Environments\n\n Across these essays Arnold Berleant demonstrates how aesthetic values and theory can be used to reappraise our social practices. He tackles issues w ithin the built environment\, everyday life\, and politics\, breaking down the dichotomy between the natural and the human. His work represents a fr esh approach to traditional philosophical questions in not only ethics\, b ut in metaphysics\, truth\, meaning\, psychology\, phenomenology\, and soc ial and moral philosophy. By critically examining the field in this way an d casting new light on social understanding and practice\, this collection makes a substantive contribution in identifying and clarifying central hu man issues\, guided by an understanding of aesthetic engagement as a power ful tool for social critique.
